Who is affected by the Sony Vaio recall?
The Sony Vaio recall includes 440,000 computers worldwide, with the US Comsumer Products Safety Commission recalling 74,000 of them in the United STates. The computers are laptops, and Sony reports that the series' being recalled are VGN-TZ100, VGN-TZ200, VGN-TZ300, and VGN-TZ2000. Sony Vaio users should check their laptops to confirm their series number, and if it their computer is affected, should visit Sony eSupport for more detailed instructions on the rework.
Is the Sony Vaio recall an isolated incident?
Plagued by a large recall of Sony computer batteries in 2006, this doesn't bode well for Sony's computer division. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission released a statement in 2006 that recalled some 340,000 rechargeable notebook computer batteries due to fires. In this instance, there were over 3 million battery packs sold throughout the world. With the Sony Vaio TZ recall less than two years later, users have to wonder whether or not Sony is the best (or safest) bet for their computer investment.
What's next for Sony following the Vaio TZ recall?
Though the problems my mother has had with her Sony desktop have been generally minimal and related to internet use, this recall does mean she'll be monitoring her computer's performance more closely from now on. Since many computer users, like my mother, keep desktop computers on all the time, concerns about overheating are common. Users should regularly monitor any computer and report concerns about overheating to Sony, or whomever has manufactured their computer.
The Sony Vaio TZ recall doesn't mean the end for Sony computers. It does mean, however, that buyers may look elsewhere before purchasing their next computer from Sony.
